So after the win over Washington, BYU is now #18 on the AP Poll and #15 on the USA Today Poll. I love Cougars! If any of you watched the game, did you think that BYU won the game because of the celebration flag thrown against Washington or do you think it had something to do with the blocked extra point? I personally would have loved to watch that game go into over time, it was a dang good game! However BYU did deserve the win, if you look at the stats they were the better team. Washington did deserve to take the game into over-time until the blocked kick. So was the excessive celebration call a bad call or is it a bad rule? The ball was clearly thrown high into the air. Did the ref have a choice?
Here is just one of the articles, and a little clip of the play itself.
The Pac-10 has decided that the officials got the controversial call near the end of Saturday's BYU-Washington game right.

Jake Locker's celebration after scoring a TD on a 3-yard run with two seconds left in the game drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
"The rule seems pretty cut and dried," Coordinator of football officiating for the Pac-10 Conference Dave Cutaia said, according to the Seattle Times, of Rule 9, Section 2, Article 2c, which states that a player can be penalized for an unsportsmanlike act for "throwing the ball high into the air."
The controversy was the 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Washington quarterback Jake Locker after he scored on a 3-yard run with two seconds left in regulation. Locker flipped the ball over his head into the air and began celebrating with his teammates. The fling drew a flag for excessive celebration.
As it's written, Locker did violate the rule. But the decision to throw the flag in a moment of jubilation provided a muddled conclusion to an exciting game and brought a storm of criticism from college football pundits. The penalty left Washington's Ryan Perkins attempting an extra point from 35 yards. Perkins' kick was low and blocked by BYU's Jan Jorgensen, leaving Washington 0-2 after the 28-27 loss.
"It is a celebration rule that we are required to call," Pac-10 referee Larry Farina said after the game. "It was not a judgment call."
However, David Parry, national coordinator national coordinator for college football officiating, said Sunday that all calls are judgment calls, although he was in no way critical of the call or the official who made it, since there's no doubt Locker broke the rule.
"I think what he meant is this was so obviously against the rule and flagrant you have no option but to throw a flag," Parry said.

Bad bad Robyn. How dare you question heavenly inspiration by an official. A rule is a rule. It is a bad rule, but a great call that simply came from above. 12-0 baby! And another national championship in site. Go Cougs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kirk
I disagree, bad call. But BYU was very LUCKY to pull off the win! Go UTES! They won by a long shot! And the main reason some people can't stand BYU is because of comments like the above. (sorry Kirk!) BYU should not be linked in anyway to "God's team", heavenly inspiration, faith, prayers, miracles......etc.......really annoying!
And how did a supposedly "bad girl" (although turned "good girl") become a cougar fan? Is there some rule against that? Can you be a "prodigal son" and still be a cougar fan? If so maybe I can cheer for the cougs.......no way!!
Can't wait for Novembers game!
P.S I really don't mind cheering for BYU when they are not playing the UOFU. I just like to trash talk with the best of them!
The blocked kick won the game. Even if it is a stupid rule, it's a rule none the less and therefore needs to be followed in any and all situations.
It's a stupid rule, but it was called. It didn't cost them a win, it cost them a tie. Their kicker should have learned how to kick a 35yd chip shot anyways.
I agree that it is a stupid rule, but it is a rule, which is an entirely different topic. Whether or not the call was right, I don't know. I thought it was WAY WRONG when I was watching the game. I thought he barely tossed it behind him, but. . . later that night I saw some different angles that followed the BALL, and I think it changed my mind. Those angles made it look much worse. So, in support for BYU, WHO CARES! We won, and we deserved to win!
kg - I never question heavenly inspiration, especailly from an official. I just wanted to see if anyone else does! Go Cougs, and go Niners!
I am loving sister decker's trash talk on my blog! Who would have guessed the deep love of the 'red' team. I believe prodigal children have those really fabulous parents. I do. They taught be to love 'blue' and I will forever be true! You may be sorry that you live on the same street as me, come November! xoxo
Clearly the blocked PAT won the game along with all those silly other points we managed to get on the board. Isn't it a kicker's job to be able to make a 35 yard kick? What's all this "it was back further so he had to kick it lower" crap!
Bad Rule, Good Call!
p.s. I am not one of those fans who cheers for the red team when they aren't playing BYU. I sure watch the games but just to see if they lose. (that was a confession)
Bring it UCLA!
It sounds like I may have shocked a few people. I may be a bit on the quiet side around the neighbors in this neighborhood, so it is easy to understand that many do not know me that well. So I am the first to admit that if someone doesn't know me well, when I make comments like the above, some may take it in the wrong way. It was meant all in fun! Promise! Hope I didn't hurt any feelings.
oh and one last confession, I do watch the BYU games, and I do cheer them on, go ahead win a few games........but the real reason is so that when we beat them the VICTORY is all that much SWEETER!
The red and blue rivalry just wouldn't be as much fun if all your neighbors cheered for the same team!!
I love that I thought that first comment was from kg when it actually was from the Welchster! I will expect a comment like that every time I blog about the Cougs Kirk! Especially when it get's the trash talking started! Good work friend!
Emily you know you can say whatever you want on my blog, you don't have to apologize to anyone! I like it when the quiet people surprise us...like Jeff at the cabin playing bonko:) and you guys with your ultimate frisbee talents and now this! We love you! But I will work on your conversion to the good side!
