...bumper stickers!

Can any of you make sense of this bumper sticker ?

EAT BEEF
the West wasn't won on salad.

I completely don't get it. Was the west won on Beef? What kind of Beef was the West won on? Do you mean riding when you say "on"? Is it plainly a 'dis' on vegetarians? Is it funny? Why would someone purchase that bumper sticker, let alone put it on your car...I should tell you it was a very beefy truck and a very beefy man who may work out 23 hours a day! (I know it's not 24 hours because he was at soccer practice for an hour)
If you know this person or have this bumper sticker, I make no apologies, just explain it to me!
My husband and I could not stop laughing and have referred back to it many times since, including this morning at 9:00 am when Jeremy was making a hamburger that included 1/4 pd. of fried cheese that he saw on Diner's, Dive's, and Drive-in's. (I know, I almost threw up!) He is all about beef and cheese for breakfast!

...thought for the day..."the West wasn't won on salad!"

The west wasn't won on brains either - and I think this bumper is an illustration of that. The west was won on brawn, and I believe the bumper sticker was some kind of reference to this as well. Of course, to be an accurate illustration of that, one would not only have to eat beef (a disgusting proposition for me in itself) but actually wrestle the cow to the ground, strangle or otherwise end its life, and carve it up for the dinner table using nothing more than the dull carving knife in your saddle bag. Now, I am sure that Jeremy did something just precisely this manly for his beefy breakfast, but most men (presumably the beefy man at soccer practice included) do the slightly less masculine thing of driving through a fast-food joint and yelling into a static-laden speaker about how the double quarter pounder is not quite enough - they would also like to biggie size everything (including their arse). So, this was a long way of saying that unless the west was won by fatties in air-conditioned trucks, then, lets face it, the humor of the bumper sticker is lost on most of us. Plus, the more important point, is that bumper stickers all over cars is like the automotive version of a mullet.
